Mapping vaccination coverage in Nigeria

Project leads: Edson UtaziAndy Tatem

Team: Justice Aheto, Ollie Pannell, Winfred Dotse-Gborgbortsi, Alexandra Frosch

Funding: The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Start: Dec 2019

Completion: Dec 2020

This project undertook geospatial mapping of measles, meningitis and yellow fever vaccination coverage using Nigeria’s 2019-20 post-campaign coverage surveys (PCCS) and the 2018 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). The key objectives were to produce maps of vaccination coverage and associated estimates of numbers of zero-dose children and to strengthen local capacity to undertake such analyses in the future.

The analyses used geolocated PCCS data sets provided by NPHCDA, publicly available 2018 Nigeria DHS data, and geospatial covariate data provided by WorldPop. Analyses that used DHS data also included multi-level modelling of risk and protective factors associated with measles and DTP vaccinations to determine their significance and implications for program planning and implementation.

Outputs from the project included:

  • 1x1km and admin level estimates of MCV coverage for PCCS survey indicators and relevant visualisations
  • 1x1km and admin level estimates of Yellow Fever vaccination coverage for PCCS survey indicators and relevant visualisations
  • 1x1km and admin level estimates of Meningitis A vaccination coverage for PCCS survey indicators and relevant visualisations
  • 1x1km and admin level estimates of MCV coverage and corresponding estimates of numbers of zero-dose children using 2018 DHS data
  • 1x1km and admin level estimates of DTP1-3 coverage and corresponding estimates of numbers of zero-dose children using 2018 DHS data
  • Results of multi-level modelling of risk factors for under vaccination using 2018 DHS data
